This is based off a question that a reader submitted to me for guidance on. You can read this post for a little background to help you understand the situation better if you so desire.
One question that was asked of me was simply this; why is my faith being tested?
I think this is a simple question in that scripture clearly tells us why we are being tested.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4
Scripture is very clear on this matter.
- We are supposed to be joyful when trials come. We should be joyful because it is these trials that should ultimately make us a better and more effective Christian.
- The testing of our faith develops perseverance. Just as a runner builds endurance for a race by breaking his body down more and more over longer periods of time, so should Christians be refined by being broken down. It is this breaking down and building of perseverance that allows Christians to face bigger tests later on. In our world today we will constantly be tested, we need to be ready for it.
We are tested so that we may become better and more effective Christians for God! Imagine if you lived most of your life and never had to stand up and be bold or courageous for Christ. What would happen when that first test came? You would probably not be able to react like you should.
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
I hope this answers this question. If you need more clarification on the issue please let me know.
What about you, when has your faith been tested? Do you feel stronger afterwards? Do you have any useful strategies you use to cope with such tests?
