Should We Ask for God’s Blessings?

I found myself asking this question the other day. Should we ask for God’s blessings? I then strove to find the answer to what I was seeking in the Word of God. I first stumbled upon a great piece in the Old Testament.

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request. 1 Chronicles 4:9-10

I think this passage alone could clearly answer my question. Yes, we should ask for God’s blessings on our lives. However, I wanted to get a little more spiritual meat on the subject. Let us look a little closer into what scripture says about asking things of God.

Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.Mark 11:24

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. Matthew 21:22

Both of these scriptures bring an important factor to the table. In order to receive from God, you must believe what you are asking is possible. (Believing in God’s provision is a good point I hit on in Bravery: The Art of Faith.)

One more thing to note form the Word is that Jesus blessed people right before he ascended to heaven. I think this action clearly shows that God wants us to be blessed.

When he had left them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Luke 24:50-51

After looking through the word I believe I can sum up what I found pretty accurately for you to understand:

I believe that God wants us to ask for His blessings with the belief that he will provide for all of our needs and will answer our prayer when we believe and are sincere.

What do you think about asking for God’s blessings? Do you regularly ask for God’s blessings on your life? Why or why not?
